Denny Hamlin will start from the pole at Watkins Glen International on Sunday, the third time the NASCAR driver will lead the Cup Series field to the green flag at a road course this season.Hamlin turned the two fastest laps in the final round of qualifying Saturday to edge William Byron for the top spot. Hamlin covered the 14-turn course in 70.392 seconds and reached a top speed of 125.298 mph. Byron was second at 124.961 mph.“There were a few spots where I feel like I still could have got a little but more,” said Hamlin, who earned the 40th pole of his Cup career. “But you can’t nitpick when you’re that good.”Starting near the front is usually advantageous on road courses, where passing can be difficult. Hamlin, though, is 0 for 2 from the prime sport on NASCAR’s serpentine courses this season. He started from the pole in Sonoma and finished 36th, and he started first at Chicago and came home 11th.Michael McDowell, one of the best drivers on road courses th...Lyon loses to Montpellier to extend poor start to Ligue 1 with Lacazette sent off

LYON, France (AP) — Lyon has two losses and no points to start the French league after falling to Montpellier 4-1 on Saturday. Lyon striker Lacazette was so overwhelmed with frustration that he was sent off in the 80th minute for a bad foul on Teji Savanier.Montpellier earned its first win after drawing with Le Havre 2-2 on the opening weekend. Winger Arnaud Nordin capitalized on a blunder from Remy Riou to open the scoring in the 20th. Riou attempted to play the ball out from the back but gave it away to Nordin, who shot past the Lyon goalkeeper.Mousa Al-Tamari doubled the lead on a counterattack in the 39th. The Jordan winger started a run from his own half and dribbled past Duje Caleta-Car before beating Riou with a low strike. Al-Tamari, who joined Montpellier from Belgian club Leuven this summer on a free transfer, made it 3-0 by chasing a long kick from goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte to slip the ball under Riou in the 66th.Lacazette cut the deficit in the 69th then Nigerian strik...Md. state police shoot man after they say he attacked a trooper with a knife

LONDON (AP) — Perhaps Tottenham will be just fine without Harry Kane. Pape Matar Sarr scored early in the second half and Lisandro Martinez added an own goal to give Tottenham a 2-0 win over Manchester United in the English Premier League on Saturday. It was just the kind of result manager Ange Postecoglou needed in his first home game to build a sense of belief as the club — and the fan base — move on from the departure of Kane to Bayern Munich. After a lively first half, Sarr put Spurs ahead in the 49th minute after Dejan Kulusevski made a good run down the right and broke into the area. The Swede’s low cross was deflected into the path of Sarr, who slotted it into the roof of the net from close range. The game had been wide open in the first half and the goal turned up the tempo even more, with chances flowing at both ends.United nearly responded immediately; Antony hit the post with a left-footed curler at the other end and Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a diving one-...Brown and Cowley take leads into final round of ISPS Handa World Invitational seeking 1st pro titles

Paul Ronzheimer is the deputy editor-in-chief of BILD and a senior journalist reporting for Axel Springer, the parent company of POLITICO.Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Saturday pushed back against growing doubts about the prospects for the counteroffensive that Kyiv is waging against Russia’s all-out invasion of his country. At the same time, Kuleba urged Kyiv’s allies to continue supplying Ukrainian armed forces with the assistance needed to make its military push succeed. His remarks in an interview with Axel Springer, POLITICO’s parent company, come as the counteroffensive struggles to achieve a major breakthrough. The Washington Post reported on Thursday that the U.S. intelligence community assesses that the Ukrainian push will fail to achieve a key goal: the southeastern city of Melitopol, a strategic Russian logistics hub. “We take such remarks in stride,” Kuleba said in the interview. “According to unnamed officials, genera...James Buckley, conservative ex-senator and brother of late writer William F. ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Business has vanished at Kingsley Odafe’s clothing shop in Nigeria’s capital, forcing him to lay off three employees. One culprit for his troubles stands out: The U.S. dollar’s strength against the Nigerian currency, the naira, has pushed the price of garments and other foreign goods beyond the reach of local consumers. A bag of imported clothes costs three times what it did two years ago. The price these days is running around 350,000 naira, or $450.“There are no sales anymore because people have to eat first before thinking of buying clothes,” Odafe said.Across the developing world, many countries are fed up with America’s dominance of the global financial system — especially the power of the dollar. They will air their grievances next week as the BRICS bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa meet with other emerging market countries in Johannesburg, South Africa. But griping about King Dollar is easier than actually deposing the de facto wo...Latest news
