Movie review: Funny, profound ‘Asteroid City’ feels like movie of the summer

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:22:11 GMT

The Southwest meets the celestial — and the stage — in Wes Anderson’s latest ditty “Asteroid City,” in which the auteur brings his singular blend of melancholy charm to a story about the stars, of all kinds.Set in September 1955 in a tiny desert town known as Asteroid City (where the Arid Plains Asteroid touched down), the main plot takes place over the course of a week in which a motley crew who has descended on the town for the Asteroid Day and Junior Stargazer celebrations finds themselves unexpectedly stranded. But the film itself is much more than that. Much like his previous outing, “The French Dispatch,” Anderson deploys a somewhat fussy, and slightly distancing framing device. The action that unfolds in Asteroid City is a play written by Conrad Earp (Edward Norton), directed by Schubert Green (Adrien Brody), and this is a televised staging (the TV broadcast is shot in black and white). The host (Bryan Cranston) walks the double audience through the behind-the-scenes action: C...

Ask Amy: Red flags fly over mismatched relationship

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:22:11 GMT

Dear Readers: Like you, I’m often curious about what happens to the advice I offer once it leaves my desk, and so I’ve asked readers to send in “updates” to let all of us know how my advice was received, if it was followed, and how things turned out.The responses have flowed in, and I’m interested and often gratified to learn what impact this experience has had on readers. This year I celebrate my 20th year of writing this column. Publishing these updates reminds me that we have been through a lot over these past decades. Some updates read like postcards from old friends, and I’m happy to share them.(It’s important to understand that most of these updates offer a positive outcome. I assume this is because when things go well, people are more willing to share their experience.)To refresh all of our memories, I’m running the original Q&A, followed by the update.Dear Amy: I’m in my mid-20s. My boyfriend is in his late 20s.We’ve been seeing each other for 10 months, and s...

A tour guide at a Revolutionary War battlefield, dressed in colonial-era garb, slipped and fell, fractured a wrist and wound up in an ER. The doctor who saw him was taken aback:“Sir, just how long have you been waiting?”Sometimes a defender can wait around for tricks, sometimes not. Against today’s four spades, West led the ace of diamonds: four, seven, queen. He then led a second diamond. Declarer ruffed, drew trumps and lost a club to East’s ace. South ruffed the next diamond and ran the clubs to discard his losing hearts. Making five.CLEAR THREATWest needed heart tricks to beat the contract and couldn’t wait to get them; dummy’s clubs were a clear threat to provide discards. At Trick Two, West must shift to the five of hearts. The defense will get two hearts, a club and a diamond. At matchpoint scoring, West might consider shifting to the king of hearts, which might stop an overtrick. At IMPs or Chicago scoring, to shift to a low heart is his be...

Putin corre el riesgo de perder su férreo control del poder. Las próximas 24 horas son críticas

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:22:11 GMT

Luggage, laundry and a chaotic lifestyle: Orioles shuttle players adjusting to challenging role

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:22:11 GMT

Logan Gillaspie doesn’t hang his clothes up.He figures, what’s the point? As one of several players who bounce back and forth from the Orioles and their Triple-A team, the relief pitcher has decided to live as a nomad.“I live out of my suitcase,” Gillaspie said. “If I wear something and it’s dirty, I put it in the laundry. I’ll wash it and then put it back in my suitcase because I already know I’ll be up and down and up and down.”The chaotic lifestyle is one that Gillaspie, a relief pitcher with Baltimore for the third time this season, has gotten used to. In addition to Gillaspie, the Orioles have three players on their 26-man roster who have frequented the shuttle, including infielder Joey Ortiz and catcher Anthony Bemboom.“I think as well as you possibly can,” manager Brandon Hyde said when asked how those players have handled that role. “It’s definitely not easy. I give them a lot of credit. When they ...
