Yankees Notebook: Clay Holmes on another dominant run after early season struggles

When Clay Holmes endured a few rough outings early in the season, neither he nor his manager panicked. The Yankees reliever allowed seven earned runs over his first 10 innings while adding two losses and two blown saves. After commandeering the Yankees’ closing role last season, the stretch hardly met expectations. But Aaron Boone pointed out that a some of those appearances featured poor luck, and Holmes felt close to being the pitcher who earned his first All-Star nod with 29 straight scoreless outings last season.“I was giving up some runs, but deep down, there was still some confidence,” Holmes said Tuesday. “I knew kind of where I was at, and that things were kind of going to turn, so it’s one of those things where it is baseball. Just being a good evaluator of kind of where you’re at is big. And I think I’ve gotten better at that throughout the years. And I knew my sinker was close. I knew my delivery was close. And it was just a matter...Grand jury indicts Daniel Penny in chokehold death of New York City subway rider Jordan Neely

By MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press)NEW YORK (AP) — A man charged with manslaughter for putting an agitated New York City subway rider in a fatal chokehold has been indicted by a grand jury, an expected procedural step that will allow the criminal case to continue.Daniel Penny was charged by Manhattan prosecutors last month in the May 1 death of Jordan Neely, a former Michael Jackson impersonator who struggled in recent years with homelessness and mental illness.Grand jury proceedings are secret and spokespeople for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg declined to comment Wednesday, but the indictment was confirmed by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.“I appreciate DA Bragg conducting a thorough investigation into the death of Jordan Neely. Like I said when the DA first brought charges, I have the utmost faith in the judicial process, and now that the Grand Jury has indicted Daniel Penny, a trial and justice can move forward,” Adams said in a statement.Neely was ...3 things we learned from the Chicago Bears, including Teven Jenkins embracing another position switch and building durability

The Chicago Bears held their second practice of mandatory minicamp Wednesday at Halas Hall, emphasizing third-down work. After practice, coach Matt Eberflus, defensive end DeMarcus Walker, tight end Robert Tonyan and left guard Teven Jenkins spoke with the media. Along with Walker’s take on his fit with the Bears, here are three things we learned.1. Along with switching positions, Teven Jenkins is focused on building durability.Jenkins received the call from offensive line coach Chris Morgan about five minutes after the Bears signed free-agent right guard Nate Davis in March. The Bears were going to move Jenkins to left guard, his second position switch in a year after they moved him from tackle to right guard in 2022.Jenkins, 25, embraced the opportunity to improve his craft at a single position, and he got to work on making the switch before the team met for OTAs.“It gave me time to actually work on my footwork and my mentality,” Jenkins said. “I got back in...Roger Payne, who found out that whales could sing, dies at 88. Listen to his discovery

By PATRICK WHITTLE (Associated Press)Roger Payne, the scientist who spurred a worldwide environmental conservation movement with his discovery that whales could sing, has died. He was 88.Payne made the discovery in 1967 during a research trip to Bermuda in which a Navy engineer provided him with a recording of curious underwater sounds documented while listening for Russian submarines. Payne identified the haunting tones as songs whales sing to one another. He saw the discovery of whale song as a chance to spur interest in saving the giant animals, who were disappearing from the planet. Payne would produce the album “Songs of the Humpback Whale” in 1970. A surprise hit, the record galvanized a global movement to end the practice of commercial whale hunting and save the whales from extinction.Payne was cognizant from the start that whale song represented a chance to get the public interested in protecting an animal previously considered little more than a resource, curiosi...Red Sox notebook: No RISP, no reward

Despite some messy innings from Kutter Crawford and Justin Garza at the beginning and end of Tuesday night’s 7-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies, it’s not the Red Sox pitching staff who should be fidgeting on the hot seat amidst the team’s recent struggles.Since May 17, the starting rotation owns the fifth-best ERA (3.60) in the Majors, with two earned runs or fewer in 18 of their last 25 games, and the bullpen owns the ninth-best ERA (3.65) since May 16.This stretch of agonizingly close games is almost entire due to a subdued lineup (and poor defense). 11 of their last 17 games were decided by one or two runs. Five of their last eight games were decided by one, including each of their previous three, all of which were extra-inning contests.Over their first 13 games of the month, the Red Sox left 103 men on base. They’re averaging 7.83 stranded runners per game, up from 6.88 in May, and 6.6 in April. Conversely, their average runs scored per game has plummeted e...Punishing winds, possible tornadoes inflict damage as storms cross US South

The Orioles have praised their depth all season. A recent run of injuries has prompted them to continually put it on display. Before Wednesday’s game with the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore made a pair of roster moves to alter its bench and bullpen. A day after the Orioles selected the contract of catcher Mark Kolozsvary when they placed first baseman Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list with vertigo, they first optioned Kolozsvary to recall infielder Joey Ortiz, their No. 5 prospect according to Baseball America, then designated the 27-year-old backstop for assignment to select right-hander Reed Garrett’s contract. Reliever Austin Voth was put on the 15-day IL with right elbow discomfort.Manager Brandon Hyde said Voth, 30, has dealt with the elbow issue since spring training, but his appearance Tuesday, in which four of the five batters he faced reached base, prompted the Orioles to shut him down. Hyde described his concern level as “very low,” believing...Connecticut’s David Pastore wins the 113th Massachusetts Open

I kind of want to get it done as fast as possible.”Ultimately, South Station Tower will feature 685,000 square feet of office space and 166 luxury residential condominiums. The transportation hub also will see major enhancements with a new train concourse area, and the size of its bus center doubled. The first phase of the decades-long project, which star...Latest news
