Avalanche Journal: Who is the best Finnish player in the NHL? It’s not an easy answer. Joel Kiviranta might be the best person to answer what is admittedly a tough question, but it stumped him as well.Who is the best Finnish player in the NHL right now? Finland is a proud hockey nation, with a rich tradition of punching far above its weight class when considering barometers like population and country size.Even for Suomi, the current crop of Finnish stars in the NHL is an incredible group. Kiviranta has played with a few of the best Finns during his NHL stops with the Dallas Stars and now the Colorado Avalanche. There are others in the conversation, but let’s start with Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen and Avs forward Mikko Rantanen.“Playing with (Heiskanen), I was pretty sure that he’s the best Finnish player in the league,” Kiviranta said. “With the puck and without the puck, and how he’s moving and how he sees the game. But, now I have played with Mikko too … and I’m not sure about that. It’s a hard to just pick one.”Rantanen state...

Letters: Don’t buy into “greedflation” — companies raising prices because they can Don’t buy into “greedflation”Re: “Economy gets stronger, but voters feel bad about it,” Dec. 12 news storyIt is reported that corporate America is seeking to maintain its profit margins by raising prices as often as they can despite the fact that profits are well above their traditional levels. This is called “greedflation” and you are a victim of it.The only way that consumers can stop being exploited is to not buy items that have irrationally increased in price. One of my lines in the sand is that I refuse to pay the standard shelf price of $5.49 for a 10 oz. bag of Tostitos Scoops. I will either wait until that product comes on sale, purchase another brand or go without. The objective of business is to get as much money out of the consumer as possible. This is the foundation of capitalism. Don’t be a sucker. So long as American consumers continue to pay ridiculous prices for items, companies will continue to raise prices.Remember, it...

This is Mickey Mouse. This is exciting because it’s kind of symbolic," said Jennifer Jenkins, a professor of law and director of Duke’s Center for the Study of Public Domain, who writes an annual Jan. 1 column for “Public Domain Day.” ”I kind of feel like the pipe on the steamboat, like expelling smoke. Russell: Americans are torn about the new tipping culture If you’ve ordered a coffee and been asked to tip your barista at Starbucks and hesitated, you’re not alone: If you don’t tip, will your chipper barista be let down? What does everyone else do?This was the subject of a fascinating new study by the Pew Research Center, which created an interactive fictional American town, “Tipping Point,” that asks users how they would tip in various situations and then lets you see how your answers compare to others. The survey is timely: Establishments requiring or asking for tips has increased. If I’m at a business and an employee hands me an iPad, I know I’m about to be asked to tip them on something that I’ve probably never paid a tip for before.According to Pew, 72% of U.S. adults say that tipping is expected in more places today than it was five years ago. Some have dubbed this new era “tipflation” because it seems so excessive.High-tech electronics are not the only cause. It seems like a trickle-down effect of participation trophies, the trend ...

Why the author of a new book about Francis Ford Coppola focused on three films

Why the author of a new book about Francis Ford Coppola focused on three films When Francis Ford Coppola was at his frenzied peak, he created astonishing worlds onscreen. Offscreen, he was intent on doing the same, striving to build a utopian creative community with his American Zoetrope and Zoetrope Studios. While pushing boundaries and challenging conventions, however, Coppola spread himself thin, which undermined his vast ambitions. For a long time, however, he came out on top with films including “The Godfather,” “The Godfather II,” “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now.”Until he didn’t.The failure of his 1981 film “One from the Heart,” a musical romance with Teri Garr, Frederic Forrest, Raul Julia and Nastassja Kinski, was heartbreaking for Coppola not just because the movie bombed but also because its financial failure undermined his dreams to revolutionize Hollywood and make a home for creative artists.Sam Wasson’s “The Path to Paradise: A Francis Ford Coppola Story” isn’t a full-on biography of the director. Wasson forgoes deep dives into later films l...
